Freshly cooked, fabulously presented
17th Century
Sir Walter Raleigh started it all when he brought potatoes back from the New World.
The French probably invented the fried potato chip though.
1800 -
There is disagreement over whether Lancashire or London invented the meal - the north ate chips as a staple and the East End introduced fried fish. Chales Dickens had a 'fried fish warehouse' in Oliver Twist. Someone eventually put the two together.
Mr Lees of Mossely in Lancashire, a Jewish immigrant, had the first fish and chip shop in 1863. Also in the 1860s was opened Joseph Malin's shop in Cleveland Way.
Very soon, fish and chip shops were opening all around the country.
Into the 20th Century
Steam powered trawlers brought fish from the North Atlantic, Iceland and Greenland. During the Second World War fish and chips were one of the few foods not rationed and people would queue for hours when they heard fish was available.
Into the 21st Century
By 1999 we ate nearly 300 million fish and chip meals and there are now 8,500 shops in the UK ... plus our Chippy Street Double Decker bus!
